While the origin of poker is obscure, its early European history dates back to the 17th century, when the French version of poque (from which the word poker was borrowed) was played. Later, the game was transformed into its German variant, pochen, and then finally morphed into the primero we know today. As with many games, poker was introduced to North America by French settlers.

Rules

The rules of poker are governed by the professional Tournament Directors Association, or Poker TDA. Founded in 2001, the group now includes more than 2,500 members in 63 countries, who work as tournament directors and managers of big live poker rooms, circuits, and independent tournaments. Betting phases

After the ante phase, a player may check his or her hand before making a bet, or may raise only when he or she believes that he has the highest card.

Hand rankings

In poker, hands are ranked based on their strength. High-hands are two cards of the same rank and at least three other unmatched cards. A pair is worth more than two pairs, but two-pairs are rare and are rarely the best hand. The highest ranking hand is a pair of aces, which beats any other hand, except for two pair. A pair of aces is worth more than any other pair, but it rarely wins a showdown.
